Ian in Rwanda

When Ian was born with clubfoot, his mother, Angelique, faced overwhelming challenges. As a single mother of two in Rwanda, she endured harsh judgment from her community and her husband’s family, who abandoned her, claiming her child’s condition was a curse. Yet, Angelique’s strength never wavered. With the support of her mother, she vowed to give Ian the chance to walk free from clubfoot.

Angelique’s journey began when she was transferred from the maternity ward to the physiotherapy department at Kibuye Clinic, where Ian’s treatment started just a week after birth. Carrying him on her back with a cast was difficult, but her determination never faded.

Her greatest moment came when Ian’s final cast was removed, revealing straight feet. “That moment felt like a testament to all the hard work, patience and faith,” she said.

Throughout it all, her parent advisor, Chantal, provided unwavering support, encouragement, and faith-based counseling that comforted her during tough times.

“I know my child will be a blessing,” Angelique shares. “I am deeply grateful to Hope Walks for supporting his treatment and to the clinicians and parent advisor for their dedication, hard work, and love.”
