Layha in the Dominican Republic
When little Layha entered the world, her parents were met not only with joy, but also with shock and sorrow. Born with clubfoot on her right foot, their dreams of seeing her run and play seemed to shatter in an instant. Her mother described the moment with a heavy heart: “It felt like my world had fallen apart.”
But hope had a plan.
Referred to the Darío Contreras clinic from the hospital where she was born, Layha began treatment early. She wore four casts and underwent a tenotomy—a small but critical procedure to cut the Achilles tendon. With each passing visit, her foot slowly began to straighten. Her mother, always by her side, brought Layha faithfully to every appointment, sometimes with help from her sister, while her father supported them from home.
The turning point came when they could see Layha’s foot finally look “normal.” It was a moment of blessing that replaced despair with joy. The journey wasn’t easy, but they never doubted it was worth it.
Now discharged and free from treatment, Layha is ready to take on the world on two straight feet. Her parents’ hope is simple but powerful: that she’ll live a full, happy life like any other child. And now, they know—she will.
