About the Country
Mozambique boasts the world’s largest ruby mine, and it is suspected that around 40% of the world’s unminded rubies are in Mozambique. Located in Southeast Africa, Mozambique has a beautiful coastline with turquoise waters and well-preserved corals. Yet, it is one of the poorest countries in all of Africa and more than 60% of the nation is impoverished. About 20% of the population is unemployed. Malnutrition, malaria, violence, and HIV/AIDS are leading causes of death in Mozambique.
Almost a million refugees have left Mozambique due to violence between the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO), created in 1976, and the government. Despite several peace treaties, there is widespread political instability due to this clash.
There are about 3 million evangelical Christians in Mozambique, making up about 46% of the population. The remaining groups are either Muslim or Ethnoreligious. There is a need for pastors, training, and discipleship in Mozambique as there is religious freedom in this nation.
Prayer Needs
We pray for the safety of our staff and the families we treat in Mozambique. We ask you to pray for the continued treatment of patients here, as transportation and availability to maintain consistent appointment attendance can be difficult due to the crime and economic situation in Mozambique.
