"A couple of years ago, my family walked for a girl named Martha who lived in Goma, in the Congo. We had pictures of her and her brother and her mom. We ended up adopting her in November of 2007. The funny thing was that we later discovered that her name wasn’t Martha at all, but Miriam. When we saw pictures of her that were taken by a family friend, we thought, 'That doesn’t look like the girl we sponsored.' But then we heard that Martha was just her nickname and her picture was just bad quality!
This summer my family and I are spending two months in Africa. Last week we went to Goma, Congo, where Hope Walks has supported kids for the last three years, and where my sister was born. I got to experience the poverty in Goma first hand, and now Hope Walks means a lot more to me. Maybe this year you’ll see Miriam walking for friends and family in Goma."

"We had come to Uganda for a walk called Hope Walks for poor orphans who didn't have enough money for school and a home. On that long bumpy bus ride I never expected to learn how lucky I was in just a few minutes.
The moment I will never forget is seeing the small mud houses and their tattered clothes. [...] Most kids have to take care of their younger siblings and don't go to school because they don't have enough money. I was only eight, but I learned I was very lucky. That moment I will never forget and will hold onto it the rest of my life."
